An inlay/onlay is a dental restoration that is made in a dental lab and then bonded to the tooth. Inlays and onlays can be made in a variety of materials, including porcelain, gold, or composite resin. Inlays cover one or more cusps of the tooth, and onlays extend over the chewing surface of the tooth while covering the cusps.
What are inlays & onlays made of?
Inlays and onlays are made from porcelain or composite resin. These materials closely resemble the look of natural teeth enamel. Porcelain or composite resin inlays and onlays are bonded to the prepared tooth and can last for many years with proper care. They are typically made of porcelain or composite resin.
Are inlays & onlays right for me?
Inlays and onlays are ideal treatments for teeth that have a greater area of decay or damage. While both inlays and onlays provide a similar degree of support, onlays cover a greater surface than inlays. An onlay can also be made from gold, porcelain, or composite resin, while an inlay is typically made from porcelain or composite resin.
Onlays are sometimes called “partial crowns” because they restore a larger amount of tooth structure than a traditional filling. Inlays and onlays can be made in your dentist’s office using CEREC technology, chairside, or in a dental lab.
How are inlays & onlays placed?
Inlays and onlays typically require two appointments to complete the procedure. At the first appointment, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing decay and shaping the surface to properly fit an inlay or onlay. The dentist will then take a mold of the tooth. This mold is used to create a custom inlay or onlay.
At the second appointment, the dentist will place the inlay or onlay onto the tooth and make any adjustments needed. The tooth will be cleaned, polished, and bonded. Once finished, it will be strong and durable, providing your tooth with years of protection.
