A dental bridge is a series of dental crowns used to replace a missing tooth. The bridge attaches to adjacent natural teeth or dental crowns. The false tooth, known as a pontic, overlaps the natural teeth on either side and is held in place by crowns on the adjacent teeth. Dental bridges can be an excellent alternative to implants.
Benefits
Dental bridges are supported by two dental crowns fused to false teeth. The dental crowns are permanently bonded to the patient’s natural teeth. Bridges prevent the remaining natural teeth from drifting out of place and preserve the patient’s smile.
Typically, bridges last between 10 and 15 years. Some last longer than others, and some succumb more quickly. As with all restorations, the bridge’s lifespan depends on how well it is cared for. When caring for your dental bridge, we recommend brushing twice a day or after every meal. Flossing daily will also help keep your dental bridge feeling and looking its best.
How is a dental bridge placed?
The process of placing a dental bridge begins by preparing the teeth on either side of the gap. These teeth will be reshaped slightly to accommodate the dental crowns that will act as anchors for the dental bridge. An impression of the prepared teeth will then be made to give the dental lab the information they need to create a dental bridge that fits properly.
The bridge will be fabricated in the dental lab and sent to our dental practice. We will schedule a follow-up consultation for you and place the bridge on your tooth to check its fit. If you feel comfortable with the bridge and the bite test shows no concerns with its fit, we will bond it permanently to the tooth.
There are several different types of dental bridges, including implant-supported bridges. All bridges are composed of two dental crowns fused together and supported by one or more abutments. The type of bridge your dentist recommends will depend upon your goals and budget.
