Dental sealants are plastic coatings that fill in the pits and grooves of teeth. They can fill in the deep areas your toothbrush can’t reach, making them great for stopping tooth decay. The sealants are painted onto the teeth and then hardened. Since they form a physical barrier against cavities, they can prevent cavities from forming.
Dental sealants are a common preventive dental treatment. Sealants are most effective when they are applied to teeth that are fully erupted. Sealants can be applied to baby teeth, but they may become less effective as the child gets older.
Which teeth need sealants?
After examining your child’s teeth, Dr. Lindbeck will recommend which teeth need sealants. Generally, we recommend sealants be placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth (premolars and molars). That’s because these teeth have deep ridges and grooves that tend to trap food and bacteria, which can lead to tooth decay.
We may recommend sealants for teeth that are prone to decay. For example, teeth that are broken or worn may benefit from having a sealant placed. Sealants can protect these teeth from decay.
Advantages of sealants
Sealants are thin, plastic coatings that protect enamel. They’re most often applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where decay occurs most often. When applied to the teeth, sealants harden to form a shield over the enamel. This barrier makes it more difficult for bacteria to stick to the teeth and cause decay. The coating also smoothes the chewing surface of the teeth, reducing the chances of plaque buildup. Also, they are quite durable and long-lasting.
How often should sealants be replaced?
Dental sealants should be replaced every 5 to 10 years, or sooner if the sealant is damaged. Dental sealants should be checked during routine dental visits. Like dental fillings, dental sealants are not permanent and may need to be replaced at some point. However, proper oral hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing, can help prolong the life of dental sealants.
