A sports mouth guard is an oral appliance designed to help prevent oral trauma that could occur as a result of sports-related activities. While sports mouth guards are most commonly used in contact sports like football, boxing, and hockey, they can also be used in non-contact sports like basketball, baseball, and soccer.
Do mouth guards prevent concussions?
Yes and no. Mouth guards made specifically for sports can help protect your teeth from sports-related injuries, such as a broken tooth. They can also reduce the severity of concussions by cushioning the impact of a hit to the head. However, they do not prevent concussions on their own. Mouth guards provide protection by absorbing the force of a blow to the face.
How long does it take to get a mouth guard?
It’s common for patients to want their mouth guards as soon as possible. However, it takes about two dental office visits from start to finish to make custom mouth guards. The first step is to cut your mouth guard into a general shape. Then, we take an impression of your teeth to make sure it fits properly.
Mouth guards fit around your teeth, so the first step is to have them properly measured. Dr. Lindbeck will take an impression of your teeth. Then, we will send it to a dental lab where your sports mouth guard will be fabricated.
Are mouth guards uncomfortable?
No, you shouldn’t be uncomfortable while wearing a sports mouth guard. Your mouth guard should fit snugly, but it shouldn’t hurt. If it is causing you pain, you may clench your jaw or grind your teeth while wearing the mouth guard. This could lead to TMJ disorder. If you have problems while wearing your mouth guard, discontinue use and schedule an appointment with our dentist.
